What actually matters, in order.

Most people arrive worrying about carat. Carat is the fourth most important thing in the room.

Cut, first and by a distance

Cut is the only one of the four that is a human decision rather than an accident of formation, and it is the one the eye reads as brilliance. A superbly cut stone of modest weight outshines a heavy, badly cut one under any light.

Shape, because she has to wear it

Round brilliant, oval, pear, emerald, cushion, marquise, heart, asscher. Shape changes how a stone reads on the hand far more than half a carat does.

Colour, to the point of diminishing return

Above a certain grade you are paying for a certificate rather than a visible difference, particularly once the stone is set in yellow or rose gold.

Carat, last

Decided by what is left, not by what is first. We will tell you where the weight stops being visible.
